My grandfather's automatic came in barely ticking — maybe two hours of run time before stopping. Chee Wai did the full bench service. He sent a photo of the movement after disassembly and flagged that the mainspring was fatigued, which was exactly what I expected but good to have confirmed in writing. Six weeks later I have a rate sheet showing it runs within three seconds a day in multiple positions. That's honestly better than I hoped.

I came in for a simple regulation pass on a vintage Seiko I wear daily. The paperwork before and after was a nice touch — I had no idea what 'amplitude' meant but Chee Wai took a few minutes to explain it. The watch settled down noticeably within the first week. The only thing I would say is the queue was a bit longer than I anticipated, but it was communicated clearly beforehand so it was not really a surprise.

The archive commission for my father's pocket watch took around four months in total. It arrived missing one hand and with a cracked crystal. Chee Wai sourced a period-appropriate replacement hand — he found one in Penang that matched closely enough — and sent photos at each stage. The proposal was clear about what was possible and what was not. What came back looked like a watch that had lived its life, not been over-restored. Exactly what we wanted.

Had two watches serviced here in the past year — one a cheap vintage piece and one a Swiss dress watch I am more careful about. Both got the same level of attention and documentation. The dress watch's rate sheet showed it running within one second a day in five of six positions. The older piece was running about eight seconds fast but that was actually within what we had agreed to target. Transparent and consistent.

I mainly needed the crown gasket on my dive watch replaced as it had been letting water fog the crystal. Quick service and the resistance test note was a thoughtful addition — it gives me something to compare against at the next service. The workshop is not the most convenient to reach by public transport but there is street parking which is fine.

My uncle's Seiko 5 had not been touched in probably fifteen years. I was prepared for bad news on cost. The scope document came back proposing the full bench service with mainspring renewal, which made sense. The parts list on the final record showed exactly what went in. It's running well and the test log shows a consistent result over the fourteen days. Very pleased.

Layer 02 — Case Studies

Three service journeys in detail

Case Study 001 · Full Bench Service

A 1971 Seiko 5 running two minutes fast per day

Challenge

The watch had not been professionally serviced since it was purchased secondhand in 1989. It was running approximately 120 seconds fast per day, stopping overnight and showing a dull tick under magnification — consistent with low mainspring power and dried lubricants.

Service

Full bench service with mainspring and gasket renewal. The escapement jewels were inspected and found serviceable; no replacement was needed. Four-bath cleaning, reassembly to maker's lubrication chart and six-position regulation. Fourteen-day test.

Outcome

Rate at completion: +4 seconds per day dial-up, within ±8 seconds across all six positions. Full fourteen-day run with consistent amplitude. Parts list: mainspring, caseback gasket, crown gasket. Timeline: 6 weeks.

"I honestly did not expect much — the watch was so far gone. The rate sheet was a genuine surprise."
Case Study 002 · Archive Restoration

A 1950s Swiss pocket watch with a missing seconds hand

Challenge

Family heirloom pocket watch, not wound in thirty years. The seconds hand was missing, the mainspring was set (fully relaxed and likely fatigued) and the dial had a hairline crack across the lower third. The owner wanted it to run but did not want it to look restored.

Service

Survey, proposal, written agreement. Full service with mainspring renewal. A period-appropriate seconds hand was sourced from a supplier in Penang — not an exact match but proportionally correct and aged. The dial crack was stabilised, not disguised. Dial surface was cleaned by specialist partner only.

Outcome

Running watch returned with matched seconds hand, stabilised dial, clean movement and archival folder including survey photographs, proposal copy, stage photographs and timing report. Timeline: 16 weeks (including parts sourcing). Project fee: RM 5,100.

"The folder was something I did not expect. It means the watch has a record now, not just a repair."
Case Study 003 · Cleaning & Regulation

A recently serviced chronograph drifting after humid storage

Challenge

Swiss automatic chronograph serviced approximately three years prior. Stored in a humid environment for twelve months and now running +25 seconds per day. Owner did not want full disassembly given the recent service, but needed the rate brought within a tighter tolerance.

Service

QZ-A pass: exterior cleaning, movement check under magnification, regulator adjustment against timing machine, caseback and crown gasket renewal, resistance test. No disassembly. Rate taken in four positions before and after.

Outcome

Rate at completion: +7 seconds per day dial-up. Gaskets renewed. Case resistance test passed. Rate sheet showed pre-service +26 spd and post-service +7 spd, agreeing with the owner's target of under 10 seconds. Turnaround: 4 working days.

"Exactly what was needed without anything extra being added. The printed record is a nice touch."
